As I suggested when the story first emerged, it seems that the so-called "griefing" attack on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) island was nothing of the sort. In a statement, ABC Island manager Abi Goldflake said this:
We've now investigated the 'griefing' episode on ABC Island on 22 May and I'd like to set the record straight for all. It was definitely not a deliberate act of vandalism but a server error caused by the island crashing during a routine back-up. Linden Labs restored the island through a rollback a few hours after we requested it. Despite some inaccurate stories in the press, there was no cost or long-term damage to the ABC Island. We're v grateful for the strong community response and help that day.
It would be great, of course, if the mainstream media and blogs which picked up this story and ran with the "scripted atom bomb" angle actually did a bit of digging. Given that other places were hit by exactly the same issue on the same day, it never seemed likely that this was any kind of griefing.
